VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FIFTY-SECOND PARLIAMENT ELECTED 3 OCTOBER 1992 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 3 October 1992 and 30 March 1996 Voting figures are taken from “Report to Parliament on the Administration of the 1992 Victorian State Election.” The Liberal and National parties, in coalition for the first time since 1948, won a sweeping victory over Joan Kirner’s demoralised Labor government at this election, and Jeff Kennett, fighting his third election as Opposition Leader, become Premier with a large majority. The 1992 redistribution abolished 12 Labor seats (Ballarat South, Brunswick, Derrimut, Doveton, Frankston North, Greensborough, Mentone, Reservoir, Ringwood, St Albans, St Kilda and Whittlesea), and created 11 new ones (Altona, Bayswater, Cranbourne, Eltham, Frankston East, Melton, Mill Park, Mooroolbark, Mordialloc, Tullamarine and Yan Yean): a net loss of one. Correspondingly, it abolished four Liberal seats (Ballarat North, Balwyn, Frankston South and Syndal) and created five new ones (Ballarat East, Ballarat West, Frankston, Pakenham and Seymour): a net gain of one. The National Party seat of Lowan was renamed Wimmera. Two Labor seats (Bellarine and Box Hill) were changed into notional Liberal seats, while two Liberal seats (Berwick and Ivanhoe) were changed into notional Labor seats). As a result, Labor went into the 1992 election with a notional 45 seats to the Liberals’ 34 and the Nationals’ 9. The Coalition needed to gain only two seats to have a majority. In the event, the Coalition gained 18 seats: Bayswater, Bendigo West, Bentleigh, Berwick, Cranbourne, Eltham, Essendon, Frankston East, Geelong, Ivanhoe, Knox, Mitcham, Monbulk, Mooroolbark, Mordialloc, Oakleigh, Tullamarine and Wantirna. This gave the Liberals a majority in their right, but Kennett nevertheless formed a Coalition government with the Nationals. This was the first time the Country / National Party had held office since 1952. Kirner resigned as Labor leader in March 1993 and was succeeded by Jim Kennan. But Kennan resigned in June for personal reasons. Labor then imported a new leader, John Brumby, who had been a federal MP 1983-90 and briefly an MLC before winning Kennan’s Broadmeadows seat at a by-election. From this election candidates were no longer required to give their full names when nominating. Candidate names are given in the form under which they nominated. (Thus, for example, Jeffrey G Kennett in 1988 becomes Jeff Kennett in 1992.) Notional majorities following the redistribution are estimates taken from The Age, 4 September 1992.
