VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-NINTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 3 APRIL 1982 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 3 April 1982 to 2 March 1985 Voting figures are taken from “Statistics Relating to the General Election Held on Saturday the 3rd April 1982,” Government Printer Melbourne 1982. John Cain led Labor to a great victory at this election, nearly 30 years after his father had last done the same thing in December 1952. Labor polled just over 50% of the primary vote, its best vote since 1952.* Labor gained 17 seats (Ballarat South, Bendigo, Bennettswood, Box Hill, Dromana, Evelyn, Frankston, Geelong West, Ivanhoe, Mitcham, Monbulk, Noble Park, Ringwood, St Kilda, Sandringham, Syndal and Warrandyte), with senior Cabinet ministers Bill Borthwick and Brian Dixon among the casualties. The key to Labor’s victory was its sweep of the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, which had been an impregnable fortress for the Liberals during the Bolte and Hamer years. The unpopularity of the federal Liberal government and the fact that the Liberals had been in power for 27 years were also factors. The Australian Democrats’ vote fell slightly, even though the party contested 63 seats compared with 48 in 1979. The Democrat vote fell in most seats which they contested in both 1979 and 1982. Their preferences favoured Labor more strongly than in 1979, ranging from 74.3% to Labor (Dromana) to 52.1% to Liberal (Geelong East), with an average of 58.8% to Labor. I have therefore allocated Democrat preferences 59% to Labor in all other seats. Lindsay Thompson resigned as Liberal leader in November 1982. Jeff Kennett, one of the right-wing rebels against the Hamer leadership, unexpectedly defeated Deputy Leader Robert Maclellan, becoming Liberal leader at 34. * Labor polled 49% in 1952, but in ten of its safest seats Labor candidates were elected unopposed. Had all seats been contested, Labor would have polled well over 50%. Labor has never again polled 50% of the primary vote in Victoria.
