VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-SEVENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 20 MARCH 1976 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 20 March 1976 to 5 May 1979 Voting figures are taken from "Legislative Assembly, Statistics Relating to the General Election Held on Saturday the 20th March 1976," Government Printer Melbourne 1976. Dick Hamer won a second successive landslide victory at this election, with the Liberals gaining the largest share of the vote the party or its predecessors had won since 1921. In the enlarged Legislative Assembly, the Liberals won 52 seats, a gain of six, while Labor won 21, a gain of three. The Liberal and Labor shares of the seats both rose slightly, at the expense of the Nationals. The redistribution makes direct comparisons difficult, but it's likely that only two seats changed hands between the major parties: Labor gaining Knox from the Liberals while losing Werribee to them. The Liberals gained Benambra from the Nationals. The 1975 redistribution enlarged the Legislative Assembly from 73 seats to 81. It did this by abolishing 14 seats and creating 22. In summary, the Liberals lost nine seats (Bellarine, Camberwell, Dundas, Geelong, Gippsland West, Glen Iris, Hampden, Moorabbin, Scoresby), but gained 14 (Berwick, Burwood, Doncaster, Forest Hill, Geelong East, Geelong West, Knox, Noble Park, Ripon, South Barwon, Springvale, Wantirna, Warrandyte, Westernport). Labor lost five seats (Brunswick East, Brunswick West, Deer Park, Kara Kara, Moonee Ponds), but gained eight (Ascot Vale, Brunswick, Bundoora, Carrum, Glenroy, Keilor, Niddrie, Werribee). The net effect was to give the Liberals a gain of five (from 45 to 50) and Labor a gain of three (from 18 to 21). The Nationals gained no new seats, which in effect made them the losers of the enlargement of the Assembly. Much of the Liberal vote gain came from the DLP, whose vote collapsed at this election. The party was dissolved in 1978, although a group of diehards later refounded it. The Australia Party also fizzled, and in 1977 it was absorbed into Don Chipp's new party, the Australian Democrats. Clyde Holding resigned as Labor leader in June 1977 and entered federal politics. He was succeeded by Frank Wilkes, who gained an early success when Labor won the Greensborough by-election with a swing of 6.3%.
