VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-SIXTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 19 MAY 1973 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 19 May 1973 to 20 March 1976 Voting figures are taken from "Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly." Party affiliations are taken from "The Age." Dick Hamer led the Victorian Liberals to their largest-ever majority at this election, a remarkable achievement for an 18-year-old government seeking a seventh straight term. Labor had expected to make gains following the election of a federal Labor government in 1972 and the sweeping reforms of the Victorian Labor Party after the debacle of 1970. The result was a triumph for Hamer and a bitter disappointment for Clyde Holding. Hamer's urbane liberal image appealed to Melbourne voters far more than Bolte's blunt country image had done. His moderate liberalism marked such a change from the Bolte era that Victorian voters felt no need to risk a change of government. The Liberals held all their suburban marginals and regained Greensborough, lost to Labor in 1970. In the country the Liberals took three seats (Dundas, Midlands and Portland) from Labor, partly because the Country Party switched their preferences back to the Liberals. Of their 1970 gains, Labor managed to retain only Dandenong, Kara Kara and Morwell. The CP regained Gippsland South from the Liberals but lost Swan Hill to them. The DLP vote crashed, falling for the first time below the party's original vote in 1955. This reflected the DLP's loss of purpose following Labor's federal victory. But most of the DLP's lost voters went to the Liberals rather than back to Labor. The Australia Party, a new party of middle-class radicals, made its debut at this election.
