VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-FFIFTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 30 MAY 1970 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 30 May 1970 to 19 May 1973 Voting figures are taken from Colin A Hughes, "Voting for the Australian State Lower Houses, 1965-1974," ANU Press 1981, and have been checked against the figures in "Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly." Sir Henry Bolte won his sixth and final victory at this election, suffering only a small drop in the Liberal vote and a net loss of only two seats. Labor staged its first recovery since the disaster of 1955, with a marked rise in its vote and a gain of six seats. Labor would have done better had not Clyde Holding's campaign been sabotaged by the left-wing controllers of the Victorian ALP Executive, who issued their own policy statement contradicting Holding's policy speech. The Country Party lost heavily, losing Gippsland South, Gippsland West and Lowan to the Liberals and Kara Kara to Labor. The DLP vote was also down, but still large enough to deliver victory to the Liberals in most of the suburban marginal seats. Labor gained only two Melbourne seats, Dandenong (won at the 1969 be-election) and Greensborough. It also gained Morwell as a result of the industralisation of the La Trobe Valley. Its other three gains - Dundas, Kara Kara and Portland - were rural seats delivered by Country Party preferences. The Bolte government was assisted in retaining its majority by the inexplicable decision of the Labor Executive to give preferences to the Liberals ahead of the Country Party in most rural seats, despite the CP's decision to give its preferences to Labor. This enabled the Liberals to win Lowan, Gippsland South and Gippsland West from the CP. Sir Henry Bolte retired undefeated in August 1972, after a record 17 years as Premier. He was succeeded by Rupert Hamer, who had transferred from the Legislative Council in a 1971 by-election. George Moss resigned as CP leader after the election and was succeeded by Peter Ross-Edwards.
