VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ==================================================================== ELECTION OF 29 APRIL 1967 ==================================================================== Shows ministerial and parliamentary offices held by MLCs in the period from 29 April 1967 to 30 May 1970 Voting figures are taken from Colin Hughes and Don Aitkin, "Voting for the Australian state upper houses, 1890-1984," ANU Press 1986. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Age." No seats changed hands at this election. The Liberals gained one seat as a result of the 1965 redistribution, giving them 18 seats to the combined Labor and CP total of 17. This meant that the Liberal government could pass legislation on the casting vote of the President. In April 1968 the Liberals lost a by-election in Western Province to the CP, once again leaving them in a minority. The 1965 redistribution abolished Southern Province, and created two new Provinces, Boronia and Templestowe. Each of these elected one member at this election, while the member for Southern Province elected in 1964 continued to represent that Province until 1970. This meant that the Council was enlarged by only one member at this election. In 1964, the Liberals won 9 seats and Labor 4, but later in 1964 Labor won a seat from the Liberals at a by-election. 2. In two rural seats, Labor did not stand a candidate and asked its supporters to vote for the Country Party. This slightly reduced the Labor vote and increased the CP vote. 3. The table shows members elected in 1964, for terms ending in 1970, and members elected at this election, for terms ending in 1973. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VOTING BY PROVINCE ==================================================================== Since this election was fought on new boundaries, changes in votes since the 1964 election are not shown.
