VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-THIRD PARLIAMENT ELECTED 27 JUNE 1964 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 27 June 1964 to 29 April 1967 Voting figures are taken from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Victoria Legislative Assembly 1890-1964," ANU Press 1975. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Age." Henry Bolte's Liberal government was elected to an unprecedented fourth term at this election. The Liberal vote rose slightly, but the LCP lost two seats to Labor (Broadmeadows and Geelong West), while gaining one (Bendigo). The LCP lost Kara Kara to the CP, but regained Moorabbin, where the independent member had rejoined the LCP. The Labor vote fell, partly as a result of not contesting six rural seats. The DLP vote also fell. By 1965 it was ten years since the last redistribution, at a time of rapid population decline in inner-city areas and very rapid increase in the outer suburbs. As a result enrolments varied enormously at this election, from 14,228 in Melbourne to 52,865 in Broadmeadows - the average enrolment was 24,777. The joint Labor- Country Party majority in the Legislative Council had blocked efforts by the government to redistribute electorates, since both parties feared losing seats to the LCP. In 1965 the government struck a deal with the Country Party, which provided for the enlargement of the Assembly from 66 to 73 members, so that new suburban seats would be created and no country seats abolished. In November 1963 Bolte surpassed Sir Albert Dunstan's record of eight years and five months of continuous office as Premier. In December 1965 he surpassed Dunstan's overall record of ten years and six months as Premier. In 1965 the LCP reverted to its original name, the Liberal Party.
