VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ==================================================================== ELECTION OF 21 JUNE 1958 ==================================================================== Shows ministerial and parliamentary offices held by MLCs in the Period from 21 June 1958 to 15 July 1961 Voting figures are taken from Colin Hughes and Don Aitkin, "Voting for the Australian state upper houses, 1890-1984," ANU Press 1986. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Age." At this election Labor lost six of the seven new seats they had won in 1952, retaining only Bendigo (Hon Arthur Smith). The five DLP members all lost theirseats (two to the LCP and three to Labor), as did the independent Sir Clifden Eager. This gave the LCP 17 of the 34 seats. Since the LCP had to provide a President, they remained dependent on the Country Party to pass legislation. This was the last occasion on which a seperate Legislative Council election was held. In 1961 the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council elections were held on the same day. Two CP members were elected unopposed. This lowered statewide turnout and the statewide CP vote. 2. Two provinces were contested only by Labor and the DLP. This had the effect of increasing both parties’ statewide votes at the expense of the non-Labor parties. 3.
