VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-FIRST PARLIAMENT ELECTED 31 MAY 1958 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 31 May 1958 to 15 July 1961 Voting figures are taken from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Victoria Legislative Assembly 1890-1964," ANU Press 1975. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Age." Because the Electoral Act required that districts for the Legislative Assembly be based on the Commonwealth Electoral Divisions, on the "two-for-one" formula, the 1955 federal redistribution was followed by a redistribution in Victoria. The Labor seats of Carlton and Collingwood were merged into a new seat of Fitzroy, and Ascot Vale was abolished. Port Melbourne was also abolished, but Labor was compensated by the creation of Yarraville. Pascoe Vale was renamed Essendon. Two new Liberal seats, Mulgrave and Ringwood, were created in the eastern suburbs. The Liberal seat of Caulfield East was renamed Ormond. Henry Bolte's Liberal government was easily re-elected at this election. The Liberal share of the vote dropped only slightly, and the DLP polled 14.4%, of which about 80% went to the Liberals as second preferences in marginal seats. This was enough for the Liberals to win all the marginal seats except Bendigo, Midlands and Oakleigh and retain a majority in their own right. The Liberals made a net gain of four seats. Two of these gains were Mulgrave and Ringwood, created by the redistribution. The Liberals also gained Essendon, Evelyn and Geelong West from Labor, while losing Bendigo. Labor suffered a net loss of two, with two seats lost through the redistribution and Essendon, Evelyn and Geelong West lost to the Liberals, offset by the gain of Bendigo from the Liberals and Richmond from the DLP, plus Coburg where the independent elected in 1955 had rejoined the Labor Party. Labor Leader Ernie Shepherd died in September 1958 and was succeeded by Clive Stoneham.
