VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTIETH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 28 MAY 1955 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 28 May 1955 and 31 May 1958 Voting figures are taken from "Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly." Party affiliations are taken from "The Argus." John Cain's government went to the polls fatally weakened by the split in the Labor Party. The twelve expelled Labor MLAs and their supporters ran as "Anti-Communist Labor" candidates, and in most seats directed their preferences to the Liberals. Since they polled over 12% of the vote, this alone guaranteed a heavy Labor defeat. The beneficiaries were Henry Bolte's Liberals, who won an absolute majority. This was the first time since 1917 that a single non-Labor party had won a majority in the assembly. Bolte was also aided by Labor's redistribution, which eliminated several Country Party seats. Tom Hollway and all his supporters (who ran as Victorian Liberals) were defeated. This, plus the influx of 20 new Liberal MLAs loyal to Bolte, ended decades of factionalism and ensured the stability needed for long-term government. The combined effects of the 1955 expulsions and the heavy defeat at this election meant that of the 37 Labor MLAs elected in 1952, only nine* were re-elected as Labor members in 1955. Only one of the expelled Labor members, Frank Scully (Richmond), held his seat. Cain retained the Labor leadership but died in August 1957. He was succeeded by Ernie Shepherd. * John Cain (Northcote), Phillip Connell (Evelyn), Val Doube (Oakleigh), John Holland (Flemington), William Ruthven (Reservoir), Ernie Shepherd (Ascot Vale), Clive Stoneham (Midlands), Keith Sutton (Albert Park) and William Towers (Collingwood) SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Voters enrolled: 1,422,588 Total votes cast: 1,318,937 92.7 Informal votes: 28,934 02.2 Formal votes 1,290,003 97.8 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- Liberal Country Party 487,408 37.8 +07.4 34 +23 Victorian Liberals 44,692 03.5 -05.8 - -04 Country Party 122,999 09.4 +01.3 10 -02 Labor Party 420,197 32.6 -15.2 20 -17 Anti-Communist Labor 162,678 12.6 1 +01 Others 52,029 04.0 1 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 1,290,003 66 +01 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.
