VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTY-SEVENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 8 NOVEMBER 1947 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 8 November 1947 and 13 May 1950 Voting figures are taken from "Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly." Party affiliations are taken from "The Argus." The determination of the Legislative Council to force John Cain's Labor government to the polls by blocking supply was vindicated when the Liberals and Country parties won a sweeping victory. Labor lost nearly half its seats, including all but one of its country seats. The Liberals were the biggest winners and overtook the Country Party, so that Tom Hollway became Premier rather than Opposition Leader John McDonald. The Country Party reluctantly joined Hollway in a coalition government, but in late 1948 McDonald and his colleagues walked out after a dispute with Hollway over the government's handling of a tram strike. Hollway then formed an all-Liberal government. Since the Country Party had more seats than Labor, McDonald again became Leader of the Opposition. The Liberals responded by renaming themselves the Liberal and Country Party and proposing a merger of the two parties. McDonald refused, but four Country Party MLAs* and two MLCs defected to the LCL. Two of the defectors were given portfolios, increasing the enmity between the two parties and pushing McDonald towards a renewal of the Dunstan-era alliance with Labor. * Guye (Polwarth), Hedditch (Portland), Hipworth (Swan Hill) and Mibus (Borung). SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Voters enrolled: 1,345,530 Total votes cast: 1,206,815 89.7 Informal votes: 16,102 01.3 Formal votes 1,190,713 98.7 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- Liberal Party 424,644 36.0 +10.2 26 +13 Country Party 177,698 14.9 -03.8 20 +02 Labor Party 485,625 40.8 -00.2 17 -14 Others 102,746 08.6 2 -01 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 1,190,713 65 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Three members were elected unopposed, two Liberals and one Country Party. This slightly lowered the statewide total and the statewide total for the Liberal Party. 2. All Labor seats were contested, for the first time since 1911. Since eight safe Labor seats had been uncontested in 1945, this caused the Labor statewide vote to rise, creating the misleading impression that the Labor vote had fallen only slightly. 3. The Liberal vote is compared with the combined total of the Liberal Party and the Ministerial Liberals in 1945.
