VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ==================================================================== ELECTION OF 15 JUNE 1946 ==================================================================== Shows ministerial and parliamentary offices held by MLCs in the period from 15 June 1946 to 18 June 1949 Voting figures are taken from Colin Hughes and Don Aitkin, "Voting for the Australian state upper houses, 1890-1984," ANU Press 1986. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Argus." In March 1949 the Liberal Party changed its name to the Liberal Country Party in an attempt to bring about a merger with the Country Party. The Country Party refused to agree to this, but four Country Party MLCs (one elected in 1943, two elected in 1946 and one elected at a 1946 by-election) defected to the new party.* This gave the Liberal Country Party a majority over the combined Labor and Country Party members. * Lansell (Bendigo), Lienhop (Bendigo), MacLeod (Western) and Rankin (Western) SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ========================================================================= Voters enrolled: 517,727 Total votes cast: 291,295 56.3 Informal votes: 5,912 02.0 Formal votes 285,383 98.0 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % 1943 1946 Total ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Liberal Party 131,710 46.2 +28.7 7 7 -01 14 -01 Country Party 38,259 13.4 -03.9 6 6 +01 12 +01 Labor Party 62,640 21.9 -11.9 3 4 7 Others 52,774 18.5 1 - 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 285,383 17 17 34 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Five members were elected unopposed, three Country Party, one Labor and one Liberal. This lowered statewide turnout and also lowered the Country Party's statewide vote. Three seats were contested only by two Liberals, and two seats were contested only by two Country Party candidates. This had the effect of increasing both parties' statewide vote by comparison with Labor. 2. The table shows members elected in 1943, for terms ending in 1949, and members elected at this election, for terms ending in 1952. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- VOTING BY PROVINCE ==================================================================== BALLARAT PROVINCE 21,540 enrolled, 17,415 (80.9%) voted ==================================================================== 1943 majority: UAP unopposed -------------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- James F Kittson Liberal Party 7,008 41.1 Nathaniel T Callow 5,445 32.0 Ord H Glenn Country Party 4,589 26.9 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 373 (02.1%) informal 17,042 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 2nd count: Glenn's 4,589 votes distributed -------------------------------------------------------------------- KITTSON 2,396 52.2 9,404 55.2 Callow 2,193 47.8 7,638 44.8 -------------------------------------------------------------------- > 4,589 17,042 05.2 -------------------------------------------------------------------- James Frederick Kittson (1891-1971): Elected 1946 Born: 26 November 1891, Greenwald Victoria Career: Military service 1914-18.
