VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTY-FIFTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 12 JUNE 1943 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 12 June 1943 to 10 November 1945 Voting figures are taken from "Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly." Party affiliations are taken from "The Argus." Albert Dunstan's Country party gained further seats from the moribund United Australia Party at this election, but his Labor Party allies were no longer willing to support him. In September 1943 Labor and the UAP joined to defeat him on the perennial issue of electoral reform. John Cain then formed a Labor government, but after only a week Dunstan secured an agreement with the UAP and returned to office heading a coalition government. In October 1945 this agreement broke down, and Dunstan was again defeated when a faction of Liberals* led by Ian Macfarlan voted with Labor to refuse supply. Macfarlan then formed an interim government to secure supply until an early election in November. Dunstan had been Premier for ten and a half years, surpassing Sir James McCulloch's record of nearly nine years. The September 1943 alliance between Dunstan and UAP was based on an agreement for a fairer redistribution of seats, which the Country Party had long resisted. After prolonged negotiations a bill was passed in November 1944, which resulted in the transfer of seven seats from the country to suburban Melbourne. * In November 1944 the UAP had been renamed the Liberal Party.
