VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTY-FOURTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 16 MARCH 1940 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 16 March 1940 to 12 June 1943 Voting figures are taken from "Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly." Party affiliations are taken from "The Argus." Albert Dunstan's Country Party government was elected at this election to a record third term, with both the Country Party and Labor gaining seats from the United Australia Party. After the election Sir Stanley Argyle resigned as UAP leader and was succeeded by Thomas Hollway. In 1938 there had been a split in the federal Country Party which had echoes in Victorian politics. One sitting member and some other candidates ran as the "Liberal Country Party." They made little impact. Albert Hocking, Dunstan's main rival in his own party, failed to win a seat. Labor continued to keep Dunstan in office during this Parliament in exchange for policy concessions, although the party outside Parliament became increasingly restive when Dunstan used World War II as an excuse for not introducing any "controversial" legislation. Dunstan's tenure was helped by the end of Legislative Council obstructionism. At the Council election in June, the Country Party and Labor won a majority of seats between them. During this parliament Dunstan overtook Harry Lawson's record for the longest continuous period as Premier, though not yet Sir James McCulloch's overall record tenure (achieved over four terms as Premier). SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Voters enrolled: 1,162,967 Total votes cast: 786,359 67.6 Informal votes: 12,287 01.6 Formal votes 774,072 98.4 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- United Australia Party 274,113 35.4 -03.7 16 -05 Country Party 116,202 15.0 +03.6 22 +02 Liberal Country Party 18,104 02.3 1 +01 Labor Party 256,744 33.2 -07.4 22 +02 Others 108,909 14.1 4 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 774,072 65 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Twenty-one members were returned unopposed, eight Labor, eight Country Party, four United Australia and one independent. This greatly reduced statewide turnout. Since the unopposed returns were roughly proportional to the totals won by each party, they probably did not much effect the parties' proportion of the statewide vote. 2. All four independents were dissident non-Labor members holding what would otherwise have been safe United Australia seats.
