VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ==================================================================== ELECTION OF 12 JUNE 1937 ==================================================================== Shows ministerial and parliamentary offices held by MLCs in the period from 12 June 1937 to 15 June 1940 Voting figures are taken from Colin Hughes and Don Aitkin, "Voting for the Australian state upper houses, 1890-1984," ANU Press 1986. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Argus." At this election the Legislative Council was elected on new boundaries for the first time since 1904. This was also the first Council election at which voting was compulsory. Unlike in 1882, when sitting members were assigned to new Provinces following a redistribution, or 1904, when all members were required to seek re-election following a redistribution, at this election one member was elected for each of the new Provinces. The members elected in 1934 to represent the abolished Provinces of Melbourne East, Melbourne South, Nelson and Wellington continued to sit for those Provinces until their terms expired in 1940.
