VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTY-SECOND PARLIAMENT ELECTED 2 MARCH 1935 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 2 March 1935 to 2 October 1937 Voting figures are taken from "Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly." Party affiliations are taken from "The Argus." This election saw Sir Stanley Argyle's UAP-CP coalition government re-elected with its majority almost intact. Labor regained only one seat (Geelong) from the UAP, which held all its suburban marginal seats. The more important change was that the UAP lost six seats to the CP. This strengthened the hand of those in the CP who were opposed to being in a coalition with the UAP. After the election Albert Dunstan replaced Murray Bourchier as CP leader. Dunstan promptly withdrew the CP ministers from the Argyle government, and moved a vote of no confidence, which was passed with Labor support. Dunstan then formed a CP minority government, supported by Labor from the cross-benches in exchange for some concessions to Labor policies. The UAP was understandably outraged at this betrayal and relations between the two non-Labor parties were extremely hostile. The UAP used its control of the Legislative Council to frustrate the government's program. As a result Dunstan called an early election in 1937.
