VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTY-FIRST PARLIAMENT ELECTED 14 MAY 1932 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 14 May 1932 to 2 March 1935 Voting figures are taken from "Statistics Relating to the General Election held on Saturday the 14th May, 1932," Government Printer, Melbourne. The split in the Labor Party over the Premiers' Plan proved predictably fatal to Labor's prospects at this election. Premier Ned Hogan (who was in London) and his supporters contested their seats as "Premiers' Plan Labor." Led by Acting Premier Tom Tunnecliffe, Labor lost nearly half its seats. The United Australia Party and the reunited Country Party, now led by Sir Stanley Argyle and John Allan respectively, won a large majority. Argyle formed a coalition government that seemed set for a long period in office. In June 1933 Allan resigned as Country Party leader and was succeeded by Murray Bourchier. SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Voters enrolled: 1,099,251 Total votes cast: 687,043 62.5 Informal votes: 9,676 01.4 Formal votes 677,367 98.6 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- United Australia Party 273,910 40.4 +02.1 31 +14 Country Party 83,519 12.3 +03.5 14 +03 Labor Party 237,993 35.1 -04.0 16 -14 Premiers' Plan Labor 17,347 02.6 2 +02 Others 64,598 09.5 2 +01 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 677,367 65 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Twenty-one members were returned unopposed, ten United Australia, seven Country Party, three Labor and one Premiers' Plan Labor. This greatly reduced statewide turnout. It also greatly reduced the United Australia and Country Party statewide vote, since many safe UAP/CP seats were uncontested. Conversely, Labor's statewide vote was improved by the fact that most of its safe seats were contested, unlike in 1929. 2. The Nationalist Party changed its name to the United Australia Party (UAP) in September 1931. UAP votes are compared with Nationalist votes in 1929. 3. The Country Progressives rejoined the Country Party in 1931. Since the two parties won 15 seats between them in 1929, the 14 won at this election was a decline of one seat (Mornington, which was lost to the UAP). 4. J T Vinton Smith, who won Oakleigh as an independent, joined the UAP after the election.
