VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ==================================================================== ELECTION OF 6 JUNE 1931 ==================================================================== Shows ministerial and parliamentary offices held by MLCs in the period from 6 June 1931 to 9 June 1934 Voting figures are taken from Colin Hughes and Don Aitkin, "Voting for the Australian state upper houses, 1890-1984," ANU Press 1986. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Argus." SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ========================================================================= Voters enrolled: 469,349 Total votes cast: 93,244 19.9 Informal votes: 595 00.6 Formal votes 92,649 99.4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % 1928 1931 Total ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nationalist 60,027 64.8 +10.5 11 12 23 +01 Country Party 2,328 02.5 -18.6 3 3 6 Labor Party 17,250 18.6 +14.5 3 2 5 -01 Others 13,044 14.1 - - - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 92,649 17 17 34 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Nine of 17 Provinces were contested. Turnout in contested provinces averaged 41.8%. 3. Labor contested four Provinces (one unopposed). The fact that Labor was opposed in Melbourne North and Melbourne West explains the apparent rise in the Labor vote. 4. The Country Party contested four Provinces (three unopposed). The fact that the CP returned all its sitting members unopposed explains the apparent fall in the CP vote. The Country Progressive member elected in 1928 returned to the CP in 1931. 5. The table shows members elected in 1928, for terms ending in 1934, and members elected at this election, for terms ending in 1937. 6. Three of the five Labor MLCs were expelled in 1932 for supporting the Premiers' Plan. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- VOTING BY PROVINCE ==================================================================== BENDIGO PROVINCE 11,771 enrolled ==================================================================== Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hon Herbert KECK * Nationalist Unopposed -------------------------------------------------------------------- Herbert Keck (1859-1937): Elected 1921 by, 1925, 1931 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Other member for Bendigo Province 1931-34 -------------------------------------------------------------------- George Victor Lansell (1883-1959): Elected 1928 -------------------------------------------------------------------- EAST YARRA PROVINCE 68,487 enrolled ==================================================================== Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hon William H EDGAR * Nationalist Unopposed -------------------------------------------------------------------- William Haslem Edgar (1858-1948): Elected 1904, 1907.
