VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTIETH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 30 NOVEMBER 1929 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 30 November 1929 to 14 May 1932 Voting figures are taken from "Statistics Relating to the General Election held on Saturday the 30th November 1929," Government Printer, Melbourne. The Nationalists and the Country Party recovered some votes and seats at this election, mainly at the expense of the Liberals and other non-Labor dissidents. Labor had its best result yet, though still short of a majority. Ned Hogan was able to form a second minority Labor government with the support of the Country Progressives and the Liberals. Hogan's government presided over the disaster of the Great Depression. In May 1931 Hogan agreed to the Premiers' Plan, with its radical cuts to government spending. The Labor Party and the unions rebelled, splitting the party. In April 1932, while Hogan was in London, the acting Premier, Tom Tunnecliffe, repudiated the Premiers' Plan. The Country Party (now reunited) then abandoned Labor and the government was defeated, leading to an early election. SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Voters enrolled: 1,029,170 Total votes cast: 639,368 62.2 Informal votes: 6,934 01.1 Formal votes 632,434 98.9 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- Nationalist 243,173 38.3 +07.6 17 +02 Liberal 28,689 04.5 -04.1 2 Country Party 54,926 08.8 +00.7 11 +01 Country Progressive 33,798 05.3 +01.1 4 Labor Party 247,251 39.1 -02.7 30 +02 Others 25,865 03.9 1 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 632,557 65 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Twenty members were returned unopposed, 14 Labor, three Nationalist, one Country Party, one Country Progressive and one independent. This greatly reduced statewide turnout. It also greatly reduced the Labor statewide vote, since most of Labor's safe seats were uncontested.* * Bendigo, Brunswick, Carlton, Clifton Hill, Coburg, Collingwood, Flemington, Footscray, Maryborough and Daylesford, Melbourne, Northcote, Richmond, Williamstown and Wonthaggi. If all of these seats had been contested, and if the Labor vote in these seats had averaged 60% (a fairly modest estimate), the Labor statewide primary vote would have been about 45%.
