VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-SEVENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 30 AUGUST 1921 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 30 August 1921 to 26 June 1924 Voting figures are taken from "Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly." Party affiliations are taken from "The Argus." Harry Lawson's gambit of a snap election did not pay off, since the new parliament was almost exactly the same as the old one, and he was forced to compromise with the VFU on the wheat issue. In September 1923 he tried to end the three-sided parliamentary impasse by forming a coalition government with the VFU (now called the Country Party). This never had the support of the CP outside parliament, and in March 1924 a series of disputes led Lawson to dismiss the CP ministers and form another Nationalist ministry. His patience with minority government exhausted, Lawson resigned in April. Sir Alexander Peacock formed a new Nationalist government which limped along until the 1924 election. SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Voters enrolled: 871,456 Total votes cast: 326,227 37.4 Informal votes: 2,429 00.7 Formal votes 323,798 99.3 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- Nationalist 151,670 46.8 -02.6 31 +01 Victorian Farmers Union 45,348 14.0 -00.4 12 -02 Labor Party 115,432 35.6 +06.3 21 +01 Others 11,348 03.5 1 -01 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 323,798 65 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Nineteen members were returned unopposed, eleven Nationalist, seven Labor and one VFU. This greatly reduced statewide turnout. It also reduced the Nationalist statewide vote, although this was partly offset by the fact that the uncontested Labor seats had larger enrolments. The Nationalist vote was also lowered by the elimination of seats contested only by two or more Nationalists VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== ABBOTSFORD 14,506 enrolled ==================================================================== 1920 majority: Labor unopposed -------------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- Gordon C WEBBER * Labor Party Unopposed -------------------------------------------------------------------- Gordon Charles Webber (1885-1960): Elected 1912 by, 1914, 1917, 1920, 1921 -------------------------------------------------------------------- ALBERT PARK 20,789 enrolled, 11,076 (53.3%) voted ==================================================================== 1920 majority: No two-party majority -------------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- William O Hug Nationalist 5,164 46.7 Arthur K WALLACE * Labor Party 5,882 53.3 -03.2 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 30 (00.3%) informal 11,046 03.3 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Arthur Knight Wallace (1879-1952): Elected 1919 by, 1920, 1921 -------------------------------------------------------------------- ALLANDALE 5,474 enrolled, 3,545 (64.8%) voted ==================================================================== 1920 majority: Nationalist unopposed -------------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- Robert Miller Labor Party 984 27.9 Hon Sir Alexander J PEACOCK * Nationalist 2,538 72.1 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 23 (00.6%) informal 3,522 22.1 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Alexander James Peacock (1861-1933): Elected 1889.
