VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-FOURTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 26 NOVEMBER 1914 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 26 November 1914 to 15 November 1917 Voting figures are taken from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Victoria Legislative Assembly 1890-1964," ANU Press 1975. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Age." Sir Alexander Peacock's Liberal government was re-elected with its majority almost intact, and survived through this wartime parliament, although the Liberal Party's rural backbench, led by John Bowser, became increasingly rebellious over government spending. By the end of 1916 they had in effect become a separate party, known as the Economy Party. In 1917 the Labor Party split over the conscription issue, with four MLAs and one MLC leaving the party. The Liberals were then renamed the Nationalists, but the division between the Economy Party and Peacock's supporters remained. When Bowser moved to censure the government in July, Peacock prevailed by only two votes, thanks to the support of most of the Labor Party. Members elected as Liberals at this election who voted against the government in 1917 are noted. SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Voters enrolled: 810,026 Total votes cast: 319,950 39.5 Informal votes: 7,254 02.3 Formal votes 312,696 97.7 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- Liberal Party 167,112 53.4 +06.8 42 -02 Labor Party 121,562 38.9 -04.2 21 +02 Others 24,022 07.7 2 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 312,696 65 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Sixteen members were returned unopposed, nine Labor and seven Liberal. This substantially reduced statewide turnout. Since all the unopposed Labor members sat for urban seats (which had larger enrolments than country seats*), this also reduced the Labor share of the statewide vote. * The nine uncontested Labor seats had a combined enrolment of 152,179. The seven uncontested Liberal seats had a combined enrolment of 64,513.
