VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-SECOND PARLIAMENT ELECTED 29 DECEMBER 1908 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 29 December 1908 to 16 November 1911 Voting figures are taken from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Victoria Legislative Assembly 1890-1964," ANU Press 1975. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Argus." Sir Thomas Bent's gamble in calling a snap election failed when his United Liberals were heavily defeated. "The Age" exulted: "Bentism was smashed in yesterday's polling... The Opposition battle was won before a vote was polled. The only question was as to the extent of the Ministerial rout." After the elections, the leader of the dissident Liberals, John Murray, formed a new government which survived until the 1911 election. Bent died in September 1909, and his followers then joined Murray in a reunited Liberal Party. The re-appearance of three-sided contests allowed Labor to gain its best result yet. Alarmed by Labor's victory in the 1910 federal election, the Liberals introduced preferential voting before the 1911 election so that Labor could no longer win seats on a minority vote. Legislation giving women the vote was passed shortly before this election, but did not come into effect until January 1909. The first state election in which Victorian women could vote was the October 1909 Brighton by-election caused by Bent's death. SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Voters enrolled: 262,876 Total votes cast: 88,460 33.7 Informal votes: 465 00.5 Formal votes 87,995 99.5 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- United Liberal Party 16,835 19.1 -32.2 22 -27 Anti-Bent Liberals 31,843 36.2 19 Labor 30,605 34.8 +00.4 21 +07 Others 8,712 09.9 3 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 87,995 65 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Twenty-five members were elected unopposed, greatly reducing the statewide turnout figure. Of these, 13 were United Liberals, five were anti-Bent Liberals and seven were Labor. This greatly reduced the United Liberal statewide vote total. 2. Three former Liberals were re-elected as independents. They might just as well be regarded as anti-Bent Liberals. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== Supporters of the Bent Ministry are classed United Liberals.
