VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-FIRST PARLIAMENT ELECTED 15 MARCH 1907 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 15 March 1907 to 29 December 1908 Voting figures are taken from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Victoria Legislative Assembly 1890-1964," ANU Press 1975. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Argus." The Bent government, now called the United Liberal Party, was re- elected with an overwhelming majority. The disappearance of the opposition Liberals left Labor as the sole opposition, and at this time Labor could win seats only in the industrial areas. The unification of the non-Labor vote eliminated three-sided contests and cost Labor its seats at Ballarat and Geelong. In late 1908, however, the United Liberals broke up as discontent over Bent's corruption and autocratic rule mounted. John Murray led a rebellion that saw Bent lose a confidence vote in November. Rather than resign, Bent asked the Governor for a dissolution, which (quite improperly) was granted. With the consolidation of the two-party system at this election, it becomes possible to show changes in votes and majorities since the previous election. The abolition of the Public Officers and Railway Officers seats reduced the size of the Assembly to 65. SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Voters enrolled: 261,174 Total votes cast: 117,098 44.8 Informal votes: 691 00.6 Formal votes 116,407 99.4 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- United Liberal Party 59,785 51.4 +13.8 49 +14 Independent Ministerial 11,029 09.5 +04.4 1 -01 Labor Party 40,044 34.4 +05.0 14 -04 Others 5,549 04.8 1 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 116,407 65 -03 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Nineteen members were elected unopposed, greatly reducing the statewide turnout figure. Of these, 17 were Liberals and two were Labor. This substantially reduced the Liberal statewide vote total. 2. The independent member was Edgar Wilkins, who retained Collingwood as an independent Labor candidate after losing his endorsement.
