VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE NINETEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 1 NOVEMBER 1902 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 1 October 1902 to 1 June 1904 Voting figures are taken from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Victoria Legislative Assembly 1890-1964," ANU Press 1975. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Argus." Hughes and Graham classed candidates as Ministerial (supporters of the Irvine government and its programme of austerity), Opposition (the minority of Liberals led by Donald Mackinnon who rejected the Irvine policy), and Labour. They gave the result as Ministerial 66, Opposition 15, Labour 14. "The Age" and "The Argus" (both of which had supported Irvine) concurred. The Ministerialists included seven who described themselves as "independent Ministerialists." This election marked the end of the old contest between Liberals and Conservatives, with the ex-Liberal Irvine leading a party that included the majority of members of both parties. In 1903 his austerity policies sparked a bitter strike of railway workers, which he ruthlessly repressed. This hastened the polarisation of politics into Labour and anti-Labour camps. In 1904 Irvine retired through ill-health, and was succeeded by Thomas Bent, a conservative. Following the reduction in the size of the Parliament, Bent called an early election in June 1904.
