VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE EIGHTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 1 NOVEMBER 1900 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 1 November 1900 to 1 October 1902 Voting figures are taken from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Victoria Legislative Assembly 1890-1964," ANU Press 1975. Candidates' given names are taken from "The Argus." Hughes and Graham classed candidates as Ministerial, Conservative, Liberal and Labour. They gave the result as Liberal 43, Ministerial 28, Conservative 18 and Labour 9. "The Age" gave the result as Liberals (including Labour) 51, Ministerial 24 and Conservative 20. The McLean government was defeated at this election and Sir George Turner formed a new Liberal ministry. After Turner's departure for the Commonwealth Parliament in February 1901, Alexander Peacock succeeded him as Premier. Peacock's government was defeated in a confidence vote in June 1902 after its inadequate response to the demands of the populist Kyabram reform movement. William Irvine formed a new Liberal government on a reform platform. When the Legislative Council rejected his program in September he sought a dissolution. This was the first election following the abolition of plural voting. Every voter now had only one vote, although those who lived in one electorate and owned property in another could still choose which electorate they voted in.
