VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE SEVENTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 14 OCTOBER 1897 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 14 October 1897 to 1 November 1900 Voting figures are taken from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Victoria Legislative Assembly 1890-1964," ANU Press 1975. Candidates' given names are taken from “The Argus.” Hughes and Graham classed candidates as Ministerial, Opposition or Labour. George Turner's Liberal ministry was returned at this election with an increased majority. Hughes and Graham calculated the numbers as Ministerial 55, Opposition 32, Labour 8. "The Age" estimate was Ministerial 61, Opposition 28, Labour 6. ("The Argus" declined to assign party labels to candidates at all, reflecting the almost complete eclipse of free-trade conservatism in Victoria.) But Turner's support, although broad, was shallow, and in November 1899 he lost a vote of confidence when many rural Liberals abandoned him. Allan McLean then formed a more conservative administration, which survived until the 1900 election.
