VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FOURTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 28 MARCH 1889 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 28 March 1889 to 20 April 1892 Voting figures are taken from a full list of final results published in "The Age" on 30 March. They are therefore more more likely to be accurate than those for earlier elections, particularly for country electorates. In the 11 two-member seats, only the number of votes cast is given, not the number of voters who cast votes. Figures have been checked where possible against retrospective figures published at the time of the 1892 election. Neither "The Age" nor "The Argus" published a table of enrolment figures for this election, so the enrolments for uncontested seats are unknown. Candidates are classified according to lists published in "The Age" and "The Argus" on 22 March. Unfortunately "The Age" no longer classed candidates as Conservative or Liberal. "The Argus" classed them only as Ministerialist or Oppositionist, and I have followed this system. Where a candidate stood as a Liberal or Conservative in 1886, or in 1892*, I have classified them accordingly. The Gillies-Deakin coalition government was defeated on a vote of confidence on 30 October 1890, and was succeeded by a another composite government (though not formally a coalition) led by a Liberal, James Munro. Munro (who was bankrupt) resigned in February 1892 following his self-appointment as Agent-General in London, and was succeeded by another Liberal, William Shiels. * As indicated in C A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Victoria Legislative Assembly 1890-1964," ANU Press 1975.
