VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 5 MARCH 1886 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 5 March 1886 to 28 March 1889 Voting figures are taken from "The Age" and other newspapers. (Unfortunately "The Argus" for 6 March is missing from the State Library's collection.) In two- and three-member seats, only the number of votes cast is given, not the number of voters who cast votes. Because the 1889 election was fought on new boundaries, the newspapers did not publish retrospective figures with the 1889 results. Candidates are classified according to lists published in "The Age" and "The Argus" on 27 February. "The Age" classed candidates as Conservative or Liberal. "The Argus" classed them as Coalitionist or Oppositionist. This referred to the Conservative-Liberal coalition government which had been in office since February 1883, first under James Service (Con) and Graham Berry (Lib), and from February 1886 under Duncan Gillies (Con) and Alfred Deakin (Lib). I have followed the classification given by "The Age," with Oppositionists indicated (Opp). Where no label is given the candidate was an independent. The Gillies-Deakin coalition government held office until the 1889 election.
