VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWELFTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 22 FEBRUARY 1883 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 22 February 1883 to 5 March 1886 Voting figures are taken from "The Age" and “The Argus.” In two- and three-member seats, only the number of votes cast is given, not the number of voters who cast votes. Figures have been checked where possible against retrospective figures published in "The Age" at the time of the 1886 election. Candidates are classified, according to lists published in "The Age" and "The Argus" on 16 February, as Conservative, Liberal or Ministerialist. ("The Argus" referred to Liberals as Radicals, but this was intended as a pejorative.) Ministerialists were members or supporters of the Conservative-Liberal coalition government led by James Service (Con) and Graham Berry (Lib) - called by "The Age" "the most immoral coalition that ever disgraced Parliament". James Francis and Duncan Gillies were the leaders of the Conservatives outside the government and Alfred Deakin was emerging as Berry's successor as Liberal leader. Sir Bryan O'Loghlen's friendless government was heavily defeated and was succeeded by the Service-Berry coalition government, which held office until the 1886 election, at which both Service and Berry retired.
