VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ==================================================================== ELECTION OF 30 NOVEMBER 1882 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 30 November 1882 to 11 September 1884 Under the Legislative Council Act, passed in 1881, the Legislative Council was restructured as a house of 42 members. Victoria was divided into 14 Provinces, each electing three members for overlapping six-year terms. Every two years, one member for each Province would come up for election. Members who held seats at the time of the 1881 Act retained them for the remainder of the ten-year terms to which they had been elected. This meant that in 1884 only nine provinces elected new members. The Act "assigned" each sitting member of the Council to one of the new Provinces, on the following basis: * Central Province: 2 to Melbourne Province, 2 to South Yarra Province, 1 to North Yarra Province. * Eastern Province: 3 to North-Eastern Province, 2 to Gippsland Province. * North Western Province: 3 to North-Central Province, 2 to Northern Province. * Southern Province: 3 to South-Eastern Province, 2 to Southern Province. * South Western Province: 3 to Wellington Province, 2 to South-Western Province. * Western Province: 3 to Nelson Province, 2 to Western Province. This left the new Provinces with the following members: Gippsland Province: 2 Melbourne Province: 2 Nelson Province: 3 * Northern Province: 2 North-Central Province: 3 * North-Eastern Province: 3 * North-Western Province: 0 North Yarra Province: 1 Southern Province: 2 South-Eastern Province: 3 * South-Western Province: 2 South Yarra Province: 2 * Wellington Province: 3 * Western Province: 2 An asterisk (*) indicates that one of these members was scheduled by rotation to stand for re-election in 1882. At this first election, in addition to the six members who were scheduled by rotation to stand for re-election, 12 new members were elected to bring the total to 42. Thus each of the new Provinces elected one member, except North Yarra and South Yarra, which each elected two members, and North-Western, which elected three members. This was the first Legislative Council election in which all polls were held on the same day. Dates of nomination and polling are therefore no longer shown.
