VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE ELEVENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 14 JULY 1880 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 14 July 1880 to 22 February 1883 Voting figures are taken from "The Age", "The Argus" and "The Australasian." In two- and three-member seats, only the number of votes cast is given, not the number of voters who cast votes. Figures have been checked where possible against retrospective figures published in "The Age" and "The Argus" at the time of the 1883 election. Enrolment figures are the same as those at the February election, because the electoral roll had not been updated. Candidates are classified, according to a list published in "The Argus" on 7 July, as Ministerial, Opposition, or Independent. Ministerialists were supporters of the free trade or conservative government led by James Service, which was defeated at this election. Oppositionists were supporters of the protectionist or liberal opposition led by Graham Berry, who formed a new government on 3 August. Berry's new government was more moderate than his previous one, but still could not persuade the Legislative Council to pass a reform bill. He eventually settled for a weak compromise, alienating many of his supporters. He was defeated in a censure vote in July 1881 and Sir Bryan O'Loghlen formed a government. This accomplished little but survived until the February 1883 election.
