VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE NINTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 11 MAY 1877 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 11 May 1877 to 28 February 1880 Voting figures are taken from Electoral Returns published in the Parliamentary Papers by order of the Legislative Assembly, October 1877. This was the first election in which all electorates voted on the same day. Dates of nomination and polling are therefore no longer shown. Elected members are classified, according to a list published in “The Argus” on 14 May 1877, as Ministerial, Opposition, Independent, or Doubtful. Ministerialists were supporters of the free trade or conservative government of Sir James McCulloch, which was heavily defeated at this election. Oppositionists were supporters of the protectionist or liberal opposition led by Graham Berry, who formed a new government on 21 May. This parliament was marked by Berry's titanic struggle with the Legislative Council. When the Council rejected his appropriations bill in December, he responded by dismissing public servants and judges: the notorious "Black Wednesday." The Council refused to budge, and Berry was unable to persuade the Imperial Government to intervene. Unfortunately for Berry, this struggle was accompanied by a depression for which his enemies, naturally, held him responsible.
