VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ELECTIONS AND APPOINTMENTS 1851-56 ==================================================================== The Victorian Legislative Council was constituted in November 1851 following the colony's separation from New South Wales. The Council consisted of five official nominees (government office-bearers), five non-official nominees (private citizens) and 20 elected members. The Council was enlarged by the addition of 16 more elected members in June 1853, and again in November 1855 when eight members from mining areas were elected. The Council ceased to exist in March 1856, with the coming of responsible government, and was replaced by a wholly elected Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.
