TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE FORTY-NINTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 3 MARCH 2018 ======================================================================== The Forty-Ninth Parliament was opened on 1 May 2018 and was dissolved on 26 March 2021. Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are from the Tasmanian Electoral Commission. Biographies of elected members are from the Tasmanian Parliament website. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Although Will Hodgman led the Liberal Party to a second successive win at this election, winning a majority of the primary vote, there was a substantial swing to Labor. The Liberals lost two seats, leaving them with a one-seat majority over Labor and the Greens. The Greens also lost ground and lost a seat to Labor. The electiomn showed the increasing gap between the Hobart seats of Denison and Franklin, where Labor and the Greens polled strongly, and the northern seats of Bass and Braddon, where the Liberals remained dominant. The new House of Assembly included 13 women and 12 men. This was first time any Australian state legislative chamber had a female majority. Seven of the ten Labor members were women, as were both the Greens members. Four of the 13 Liberals were women. Hodgman resigned in January 2020, citing family reasons. Peter Gutwein was elected as his successor. Rebecca White remained Opposition Leader. Labior lost a seat in Septembwer 2019 when Scott Bacon resigned. The countback was won by Madeleine Ogilvie, who had been a Labor candidate in 2018 but had since become an independent. She joined the Liberal Party before the 2021 election.
