TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE FORTY-SEVENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 20 MARCH 2010 ======================================================================== The Forty-Seventh Parliament was opened on 4 May 2010 and was dissolved on 12 February 2014. Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are from the Tasmanian Electoral Commission. Biographies of elected members are from the Tasmanian Parliament website. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ David Bartlett's Labor government suffered a severe setabck at this election, with its primary vote falling below 40% and the loss of four seats. The Liberals won three seats from Labor and the Greens won the fourth. This left Labor and the Liberals each with ten seats, and the Greens holding the balance of power with five. This created a dilemma both Bartlett and the Liberal leader Will Hodgman, since both had promised not to form a government dependent on the Greens. Accordingly, Bartlett saw the Governor and advised him to send for Hodgman, but did not actually resign. Hodgman refused to take office unless Bartlett resigned. The Governor was then obliged to recommission Bartlett, who formed an interim three-member ministry. When the House met, Hodgman moved a vote of no confidence in the government, which was defeated when the Greens sided with Labor. Bartlett then regarded himself as freed from his pre-election promise, and formed a coalition government with the Greens. Greens leader Nick McKim joined the Cabinet, a first in any state government. The election setack and subsequent breaking of his pre-election pledge greatly weakened Batlett's position, and in January 2011 he resigned as Premier, being succeeded by Lara Giddings. He resigned from parliament in May. Giddings continued the coalition with the Greens until January 2014, when, with the next election approaching and Labor trailing in the polls, she announced the agreement was ended, and McKim left the ministry.
