TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE FORTY-FIFTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 20 JULY 2002 ======================================================================== The Forty-Fifth Parliament was opened on 24 September 2002 and was dissolved on 17 February 2006 Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are from the Tasmanian Electoral Commission. Biographies of elected members are from the Tasmanian Parliament website. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jim Bacon lead Labor to a decisive victory at this election. Labor polled a clear majority of the primary vote and retained the 14 aeats it had won in 1998. The Liberals polled less than 30% and were reduced to seven seats. Only in Bass and Braddon did they mange to retain two seats. The Greens staged a strong comedback, polling 18% of the vote and winning four seats. Bacon's dominance of Tasmanin politics proved short-lived. In March 2004 he was diagnosed with lung cancer and resigned, dying a few months later. He was succeeded by Paul Lennon, a much less forceful character. Opposition leader Bob Cheek lost his seat at the election, and was succeeded by Rene Hidding. Peg Putt became the formal leader of the Tasmanian Greens.
