Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jim Bacon led Labor to a comfortable victory at this election. The reduction in the size of the House of Assenbly had the intended effect of making it harder for the Greens to win seats - three of their four members were defeated. It was their preferences which enabled Labor to win 14 seats with only 44.8% of the vote. As well as the Greens, the Liberals lost heavily as a result of the higher quota, winning only two seats in each of the five Divisions. Tony Rundle resigned as Liberal leader after the election. He was succeded by Sue Napier, the first woman to lead a major party in Tasmania. But ill-health forced her resignation in August 2001, and she was succeeded by Bob Cheek.
