TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE THIRTY-FIRST PARLIAMENT ELECTED 19 FEBRUARY 1955 ======================================================================== The Thirty-First Parliament was opened on 13 April 1955 and was dissolved on 20 September 1956 Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on Parliamemtary Elections", 1955, by C A Blakney, Chief Electoral Officer. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Since the National Library's Trove newspaper archive ends in 1954, I have been unable to locate a list of candidates for this election. The "Report on Parliamemtary Elections" gives only candidate surnames. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Both the Labor and Liberal parties increased their vote share at this election, at the expense of independent candidates. As a result the Liberals won the three seats won by independents in 1950, giving them 15 seats, the same as Labor. But since Labor clearly won the election in terms of votes, the Liberals agreed, under the terms of the 1954 agreement, to break the deadlock by nominating a Liberal member as Speaker. In September 1956 a Labor member, Carrol Bramich, defected to the Liberals. This gave the Liberals 16 seats. But rather than allow a Liberal government to take office, Premier Cosgrove sought and was granted a dissolution by the Governor, and a new election was held in October. Rex Townley resigned as Liberal leader in June 1956 and was succeeded by William (Tim) Jackson. Before 1955 female candidates of both parties had consistently polled poorly. But at this election two were elected, both Liberals. Mabel Miller topped the poll in Franklin, and Millie Best won a seat in Wilmot.
