TASMANIA ==================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FIFTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 29 MARCH 1906 ==================================================================== The Fifteenth Parliament was opened on 29 May 1906 and expired on 27 March 1909 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- Figures are taken from Hughes and Graham, "Voting for the South Australian, Western Australian and Tasmanian lower houses, 1890- 1964." Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. I have checked the figures in Hughes and Graham against the newspaper reports, which has enabled me to correct a number of errors. Where there are only minor differences between Hughes and Graham's figures and the newspaper figures, I have used Hughes and Graham. I have calculated all percentages myself, since there are numerous errors in Hughes and Graham. Unfortunately, Hughes and Graham give only candidate initials. Candidate full names have been sourced from newspaper reports. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Evans Ministry was returned with 16 supporters, facing eight Opposition members, seven Labour members, and four unaligned members. After the elections the Ministerial and Opposition groups merged to become the Anti-Socialist party, giving Evans a clear majority which kept him in office until the 1909 election. This was the first Tasmanian election at which women were able to vote. This caused a drop in statewide turnout because many women enrolled but did not vote. This was particuarly marked in the Hobart seats, where women were the majority of enrolled voters. STATE SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Enrolled voters: 89,029 Total votes counted: 39,369 44.2 Informal votes: 534 01.4 Formal votes: 38,835 98.6 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ministerial 11,844 30.5 -12.1 16 -03 Opposition 4,922 12.7 -09.6 8 +02 Labour 8,015 20.6 +01.9 7 +04 Others 14,054 36.2 4 -03 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 38,835 35 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. The Ministerial vote is compared to the Opposition vote in 1903, and vice versa. In neither case is the comparison exact because a number of members changed sides during the 1903-06 parliament. 2. Eight members were returned unopposed. This reduced the statewide turnout. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== The number of enrolled voters in each district is taken from a table in the "Hobart Mercury", 12 April 1906. The total enrolment for the state was 89,029. The average enrolment was therefore 2,544. The largest enrolment was Hobart Central with 3,290, and the smallest was Lyell with 1,991. (At the 1903 election Lyell had the largest enrolment. The change was because Lyell, a mining seat, had fewer women on the roll than any other seat.) Party alignments of candidates are taken from Hughes and Graham.
