QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-NINTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 13 JUNE 1998 ==================================================================== The Forty-Ninth Parliament was opened on 28 July 1998 and dissolved on 23 January 2001 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- Election Commission of Queensland, Queensland Parliament website Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Under the leadership of Peter Beattie, Labor returned to office at this election after one term in opposition, defeating the National- Liberal Coalition government led by Premier Rob Borbidge. Although Labor won only 44 seats, one fewer than in 1995 and the same number it had before the election, it gained the support of newly-elected independent member Peter Wellington, and was able to form a minority government. Later in 1998 Labor won the Mulgrave by-election, giving it 45 seats and majority government. At the 1996 federal election, Pauline Hanson had won the Queensland seat of Oxley as an independent after being disendorsed by the Liberal Party. She then formed the One Nation party on a platform of opposition to Asian immigration. This election was the first electoral test for One Nation. The party polled 22.7% of the vote and won 11 seats, six from Labor and five from the Nationals. Most of its vote came from the Coalition parties, whose vote fell by 17.8%. But during this parliament One Nation disintegrated and all 11 elected members left the party. One resigned his seat, six formed a new City-Country Alliance, and four sat as independents. Beattie was sworn in as Premier on 26 June. He and his deputy Jim Elder formed an interim two man ministry which held office until 29 June. I have not included these interim appoinments under the seats of Brisbane Central (Beattie) and Capalaba (Elder.) * Beattie was Premier, Minister for Families, Youth and Community Care, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Minister for Health, Minister for Education, Minister for Environment, Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Forestry, Minister for Training and Industrial Relations, and Minister for Public Works and Housing. * Elder was Deputy Premier, Treasurer, Minister for Arts, Minister for Police and Corrective Services, Minister for Racing, Minister for Economic Development and Trade, Minister for Tourism, Small Business and Industry, Minister for Mines and Energy, Minister for Local Government and Planning, Minister for Natural Resources, Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Minister for Emergency Services and Minister for Sport. Outgoing Premier Borbidge remained as Leader of the National Party and of the Opposition. Joan Sheldon resigned as Liberal Leader after the election and was succeeded by Dr David Watson. During 2000 the Shepherdson Inquiry established that Deputy Premier Jim Elder and two Labor backbenchers, Grant Musgrove and Mike Kaiser, had signed false election enrolment forms in an effort to influence Labor preselections. Elder resigned from the ministry and all three retired at the 2001 election.
