QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-FOURTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 22 OCTOBER 1983 ==================================================================== The Forty-Fourth Parliament was opened on 22 November 1983 and dissolved on 30 September 1986. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered to be Printed, 28 February 1984. This report includes enrolment figures, lists of polling places, and full names and party affiliations of candidates. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joh Bjelke-Petersen led his National Party to victory at this election, defeating both the Labor opposition and his former coalition partners the Liberals. This was Bjelke-Petersen's sixth successive win and Labor's tenth successive defeat. The Nationals won 41 seats, two short of a majority, and could probably have relied on the former National Lindsay Hartwig, who was re-elected as an independent. But in the event two Liberal ex- ministers, Brian Austin and Don Lane, defected to the Nationals immediately after the election, giving Bjelke-Petersen 43 seats and a majority in his own right. Labor polled 43.9%, up from 1980 but a lower percentage than in 1972, and made a net gain of seven seats, all from the Liberals. (Labor gained Mount Isa from the Nationals but lost Maryborough to them.) But in reality Labor was no closer to government, since the Nationals and Liberals polled 58.8% of the vote between them. In late 1984 Keith Wright resigned as leader and departed for federal politics. He was succeeded by Neville Warburton. The result was a disaster for the Liberals, whose voters clearly rejected Terry White's break with the Nationals. Even the Nationals were surprised by their wins in city seats like Greenslopes and Toowong. The Liberals lost seven seats to Labor and seven to the Nationals, leaving them with only eight. This fell to six when Austin and Lane defected, but rose to seven when they regained Stafford at a 1984 by-election. White resigned immediately and was succeeded by the former leader Sir William Knox.
