QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-THIRD PARLIAMENT ELECTED 29 NOVEMBER 1980 ==================================================================== The Forty-Third Parliament was opened on 3 March 1981 and dissolved on 13 September 1983. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", 1981. This report includes enrolment figures, lists of polling places, and full names and party affiliations of candidates. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Led by Joh Bjelke-Petersen for the fifth time, the National and Liberal coalition government won a ninth successive term at this election. The coalition increased its vote share to 54.8%, but lost two seats to Labor. Both losses (Mourilyan and Townsville West) were in the north. Labor failed to win any of the key Brisbane marginal seats such as Ashgrove, Stafford and Windsor. This was despite the increasing acrimony between the National and Liberal parties, which saw the Nationals win three seats from the Liberals. Tensions within the Coalition came to a head in August 1983 when the junior Liberal minister Terry White crossed the floor to vote for a Labor motion to establish a public accounts committee. The Liberal leader Dr Llew Edwards forced White to resign from the ministry. White then challenged Edwards at a party meeting and replaced him as Leader. Bjelke-Petersen refused to accept White as a minister, whereupon all the Liberal ministers resigned. Bjelke-Petersen then formed a minority National Party government which held office until the election in October. Two Liberal members (Kaus and Moore) defected to the National Party. Labor's disappointing performance at this election weakened support for Ed Casey as Leader. In October 1982 he was replaced by Keith Wright.
