QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 28 APRIL TO 26 MAY 1888 ==================================================================== The Tenth Parliament was opened on 12 June 1888 and dissolved on 5 April 1893. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from newspaper reports (mainly the "Brisbane Courier"). * Dates of nomination and polling are from the "Queensland Government Gazette." * Candidates' given names and biographies are from newspaper reports, the "Queensland Government Gazette" and the Queensland Parliament website. * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Liberal government of Sir Samuel Griffith was heavily defeated at this election, winning 24 seats. The Nationalist (or conservative) opposition led by Sir Thomas McIlwraith won 47 seats. Labour, at its first election, won one seat (Bundanba). McIlwraith took office on 13 June, but his chronic ill-health forced his resignation in November. He was succeeded by Boyd Morehead. In 1890 McIlwraith fell out with Morehead and formed a coalition with Griffith, who returned as Premier with McIlwraith as Treasurer. In March 1893 Griffith was appointed Chief Justice of Queensland and McIlwraith returned as Premier. This was the beginning of the "perpetual ministry" or "Griffilwraith", which held office (with one brief break) for the next 13 years. The effective merging of the Conservative and Liberal parties allowed the emergence of Labour as the only opposition. Electoral reforms passed during this Parliament reduced the parliamentary term from five years to three, and introduced "contingent" (preferential) voting (for the first time in Australia). These took effect from the 1893 election. Ministerial by-elections were abolished from the end of this Parliament, reducing the number of by-elections. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== Members elected are described as Labour, Liberals or Nationalists according to the list published in the "Western Star" (Roma) on 30 May 1888.
