OPPOSITION EXECUTIVES AND SHADOW MINISTRIES 1. 1901-83 * Beginning in June 1901, the Parliamentary Labour Party elected a Caucus Executive. The Executive initially consisted only of office bearers and until 1941 it continued in existence even when the party was in government. During the ALPıs periods in Opposition after 1917 the Executive came to function as a shadow ministry, though without specific portfolios. In 1969 the ALP adopted a shadow ministry system with portfolios allocated by the Leader. * The non-Labor parties, during their periods in Opposition up to 1949, retained the older system of an informal front-bench, but the Liberal Party adopted the shadow ministry system when it went into Opposition in 1973, and both sides of politics have followed it since then. * These tables show the executive or shadow ministry as elected or appointed at the start of each Parliament, and at the election of new party leaders. Some changes during the course of each Parliament are not shown.
