COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE SENATE INDEX OF CANDIDATES 1901-2020 ===================================================== Introduction ===================================================== * Where a candidate was elected, their successful candidacies are indicated with an asterisk, and their surnames appear in CAPITALS. * Candidate names are usually given as they appeared on the ballot papers. From 1903, up to and including the 1983 elections, candidates were required to give their full names (though not all did so). Since the 1984 elections candidates have been free to use whatever form of their names they like. Where I am aware of a candidate's full name, I have given this. This includes all elected Members and Senators. * Where a candidate has nominated under a different form of their name (eg, where John William Smith has nominated as Smith, Jack), both forms are given, the full name first and the form used on the ballot paper in brackets. Where appropriate, a cross- reference is given (eg, the listing at Brown, Bob gives a reference to Brown, Robert John). * Where there are variations in the spelling of a candidate's name at different elections (eg, Blanchard, David and Blanshard, David), both forms are listed. * Where a candidate has changed their surname through marriage, entries appear at both surnames. (Only two sitting MPs have done this: Kathy Martin / Sullivan and Sophie Panopoulos / Mirabella.) * Where candidates commonly used a surname which was not the legal form of their name (eg, Walter Massy- Greene was legally Greene, Walter Massy), both forms are listed. * I have assumed that candidates with Chinese-type names have nominated using a western name order, unless I know for a fact they have not. Thus I have assumed that Chung Li Chan's surname is Chan, not Chung. * It is often not possible to determine whether candidates of the same name are the same person or not, and this problem has increased since 1984, since candidates are longer required to give their full names. Where doubt exists, they have been listed separately. * Senators who were appointed to casual vacancies do not appear here unless they were also candidates for election. * Although the 2013 Senate election in Western Australia was declared void, I have shown all candidates at that election, as well as at the 2014 re-run of the election.
