Hasluck was created at the 2001 redistribution, in Perth's fast-growing outer eastern suburbs. Although it has the high proportion of dwellings being purchased typical of outer suburban seats, it has a lower rate of families with dependent children than is usual for such seats, and cannot be classed as a pure mortgage belt seat as a result. It has a low proportion of people born in non English speaking countries, and a very low proportion of people in professional occupations. The Labor vote in concentrated in the Midland areas in the north of the seat, and around Thornlie and Gosnells in the south - the middle part of seat around Kalamunda is heavily Liberal. Hasluck was won in 2001 by Labor's Sharryn Jackson, but John Howard's successful pitch to outer suburban voters allowed the Liberals' Stuart Henry to claim the seat in 2004. In 2007, aided by the Howard government's unpopular WorkChoices laws, Jackson regained the seat with a 3.1% swing - a good reasult for Labor in a state where two other seats were lost. Labor polled 63% of the two-party vote at Koongamya and Middle Swan, and also topped 60% at Gosnells South, Maddington, Maddington East and Midland. The Liberals polled 62% at Gooseberry Hill and Lesmurdie.
