Section 15 of the Constitution, as amended in 1977, required that Senators chosen by state Parliaments to fill casual vacancies should be members of the same party as the departed Senator. The Tasmanian Government maintained that this did not require it to accept any nominee put forward by the ALP, but entitled it to choose between two or more nominees. The constitutional deadlock thus arising was unresolved when the term of the Thirty-Fourth Parliament ended. --------------------------------------------------------------------
