Secretary French Polishers Union. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Field was a member of the ALP but was expelled as soon as he accepted nomination to Milliner's vacancy against the endorsed ALP candidate. His appointment by the National-Liberal government of Queensland broke the convention which had existed since 1949 that deceased or resigned Senators should be replaced by members of their own parties. Field's appointment was challenged in the High Court and he was unable to take his seat before the double dissolution of 11 November 1975. His appointment nevertheless deprived the ALP of a place during the votes on supply in October 1975 and thus was crucial in precipitating the crisis of November 1975. --------------------------------------------------------------------
