Nicholls, Mattner, Bishop, Hannaford and Cavanagh began their terms 1 July 1962. Nicholls, Mattner, Bishop, Hannaford and Cavanagh elected for a term ending 30 June 1968. Buttfield elected for a term ending 30 June 1965 (remainder of Pearson's term). Continuing senators (term to end 30 June 1965): Arnold DRURY (ALP), Keith LAUGHT (Lib), Clement RIDLEY (ALP), James TOOHEY (ALP). -------------------------------------------------------------------- Senator Gordon Davidson's term ended and Buttfield's term began on 9 December 1961 because Davidson had been appointed to the remainder of Senator Rex Pearson's term in 1961. Davidson did not contest the 1961 election. Since Pearson's term was technically unexpired, Buttfield was held to have replaced Davidson from the date of the election. Since Buttfield was already a serving Senator whose term expired on 30 June 1962, she resigned her place on 8 December 1961 to take up the short-term vacancy. -------------------------------------------------------------------- > Reginald Bishop (1913-99): Elected 1961 Born: 4 February 1913, Adelaide Career: Educated state schools.
