He died without knowing that he had lost his seat. He was member for Cowper for 42 years, the longest period for which a member of the House of Representatives has held a single seat (Billy Hughes was a member for 51 years, but held four different seats). Since he was defeated, he technically ceased to be a member of Parliament on 2 November 1961, the day the Twenty-Third Parliament was dissolved.
